Robots and copyright

The guardian has published an article on the Philip K Dick android titled “Do Robots Dream of Copyright?” The article quotes Olney, who designed the AI for Phil, as noting that the project wanted the “goodwill” of the estate. However the situation is slightly different to the impression given by the Guardian article.
The estate was approached prior to commencement, and their approval was sought – and given – for the project.
As can be seen from the official Philip K Dick site, the android is mentioned and endorsed.
Certainly there are IP issues with a complex project such as this. The robot has the Dick’s likeness and speaks using a database that has processed his words. This is why it was important to get the approval and endorsement of all interested parties before proceeding.
